GENERAL MEDICAL DOSSIER
Your GP collects all your important medical data (operations, chronic diseases, reports from specialists and other healthcare providers, data on treatments, etc.) in your General Medical File or Dossier (GMD).
The GMD is free for everyone that is signed up with a Belgian health insurance provider., because then the annual contribution is fully reimbursed by your health insurance fund. For administrative reasons, the general practitioner arranges this with your health insurance company via a third party payment system (direct settlement). For this purpose, you bring a health insurance card and your ID card.
The collection of your medical data enables better individual counselling and better consultation between care providers. This file ensures that your general practitioner has an overall picture of your state of health. This enables him/her to better assess which examinations are necessary or superfluous and whether proposed treatments do not conflict with each other.
If you have a GMD, you will also receive a 30% reduction on the patient contribution (i.e. the amount that you will not receive back from the health insurance company) for a consultation or a home visit to each of the doctors in our group practice. If you consult a doctor outside our practice, this reduction in the co-payment does not apply. The reimbursement rate depends on the category to which you belong (under 10 years old, chronically ill, palliative patient,…).
